The Senate advises on matters of research, teaching and studies that concern the whole university or are of fundamental importance.

The Senate is responsible for exercising a prudent and constructive control of power and for contributing to the development of the University. The Senators see it as their duty to contribute to the University's development beyond their own personal and technical areas of interest and to submit to a higher common interest.

Responsibilities of the Senate

To prepare its decisions, the Senate forms central senate committees. The Senate appoints special Senate representatives to carry out special tasks. These representatives are answerable to the Senate.

Pursuant to section 21 subsection 1 of the Higher Education Act of Schleswig-Holstein, the Senate is responsible in particular for:

  • Deciding on the constitution, as well as on the university statutes
  • Electing and deselecting the President, the Vice-Presidents, as well as the Chancellor
  • Deciding on the research priorities of the University
  • Consenting to the research report of the University
  • Opinion on a financial report of the University
  • Resolution on a budget / budgetary right
  • Commenting on the University's structure and development plan
  • Commenting on target and performance agreements
  • Commenting and making proposals on the establishment, change or cancellation of degree programs
  • Commenting on appointment proposals
  • Deciding on the establishment, amendment or abolition of scientific units in accordance with the provisions of the constitution
  • Deciding on issues of fundamental importance in matters regarding the promotion of young scientists and artists
  • Commenting on examination regulations, adoption of the rules governing examination procedure, interdisciplinary provisions for examinations, as well as adoption of principles for PhD regulations and regulations pertaining to post-doctoral qualifications (Habilitation).
  • Commenting on special research projects
  • Deciding on laureateships and honors.
