Teaching evaluation (LVE)

Evaluation at EUF is committed to transparent objectives in specific areas. Only by orienting the evaluation instruments to a complex concept of quality on several levels it is possible to make evaluation subordinate to the goals of study and teaching. The outcomes of evaluations are a supporting element to further development in studies and teaching.

The Standards for evaluating the overarching results are subject of an ongoing negotiation process, which is conducted in communication within the degree programmes or organisational units.

Through continuous systematic surveys, teaching evaluation is a tool for students to give feedback to teachers and for lecturers to ensure the quality of their courses in the long term.

Evaluation is always linked to a reflection of one's own strategies for action. How do I do something? Why do I do it this way and not otherwise? What consequences do my requirements have for others? Are there alternative ways to reach the set goals? Dealing with such questions sometimes requires extra effort and seems complicated to realize in everyday working life. Also, the evaluation could bring to light results that I do not want to see, because they do not fit my self-image as a teacher. In the sense of continuous improvement, the LVE should provide assistance in dealing with one's own blind spots. Only as learners are we able to rediscover the teaching situation again and again.

The standardized questionnaires offer a broad framework for taking one's own teaching into account. It is also possible to compare the semesters over long periods of time.

Requestform LVE

The learning-outcome oriented questionnaire is based on the BEvaKomp instrument. He mainly asks the students how well they were able to achieve the desired learning result in the completed course – i.e. what competence gain they observe in themselves. On this basis, you can further develop your course and consider in the next round whether desired changes have occurred.

At the same time, this questionnaire offers students incentives to reflect on their own competence gains.

The teaching-process oriented questionnaire is based on the HILVE2 questionnaire. This mainly gives you feedback from students on how they rate you as a teacher. With the help of this questionnaire, you can compare your self-perception with the feedback of the students from various points of view. You will also receive an overall rating for your course.

The questionnaires are adapted for lectures or seminars and comparable forms of events and contain questions about cooperation in the latter.

All questionnaires are available in German and English. With the digital questionnaires, students select the language as required directly in the online form. For paper surveys, please indicate the desired language in the application form.

These questionnaires are only samples and can not be used for your specific class.

With the pandemic-related switch to digital teaching, the LVE was also switched from paper to digital format. In order to conserve resources, the use of the online LVE is also strongly recommended for teaching in person. To increase the returns in the online LVE, there are various measures, which we explain in detail in the following tab.

Online-survey

The online LVE is an anonymous web-based survey of students.

For the online surveys, you can choose between TAN procedure or direct link.

  • In the TAN procedure, students are individually contacted by e-mail and personally repeatedly reminded of their participation.
  • With a direct link you will receive an access link for the corresponding LVE. This link can be used repeatedly and shared with students. You will receive a QR-code by e-mail, which you can project e.g. in your course. With this type of survey, you are responsible to ensure that students receive the access link to the survey.

Both online procedures also work in face-to-face courses: You can allow time (five to ten minutes) for the processing of the LVE during a course and ask the students to complete the survey.  Either the students then access their personal e-mail-accounts or you project the QR-code of the LVE. We assume that all students have the technical requirements, as the LVE is also possible with a smartphone.

You can specify the duration of the online LVE in the application: there are two or four weeks to choose from. During the duration of the online course, students receive reminder e-mails: the first after one week, then two more reminder e-mails, depending on which duration you selected for the course.

Paper and Pencil survey

The paper survey is an anonymous, written survey of students in person.

Procedure of the paper surveys:

  1. Apply for an LVE via the application form (select paper survey)
  2. The questionnaires are prepared for the respective event and sent to you together with a cover letter of the survey by in-house mail in an unsealed envelope.
  3. Have the students fill out the questionnaires in your course by
    • handing over the sheets to the students,
    • making reference to the instructions for completion on the questionnaire header,
    • asking someone of the students to collect the sheets independently,
    • and enclose all sheets together with the supplied cover letter in the envelope and close it
    • and return the envelope via in-house mail (P.O. Box number 187) to the evaluation team
  4. The evaluation will be sent to you personally by e-mail within a few days.
Note

In order to ensure a flawless course evaluation, it is necessary to use only LVE forms that have been sent to you specifically for this course.

Decisive for a successful LVE is the timing of the invitation to participate in the LVE, because this creates commitment.

If the online course becomes one task among many in the daily routine of the students and is also to happen completely detached from the events of the course (sent by e-mail, no reference is made to it in the course), the probability that you will receive feedback that focuses on your course is very low - if you get feedback at all.

=> Embed the LVE in the process of your course! Give ten minutes in the first third of your course on day X for this and the response rate for your online course will be a success!

In addition, you can choose the duration of the course yourself and students receive a weekly reminder to participate (in the case of TAN procedures). If the response rate is still insufficient, we will automatically extend your LVE and notify you accordingly.

We assume that the students have technical equipment that makes it possible to participate in the online LVE during your course.

The online LVE does not forsee any additional effort for you – on the contrary: you will have less work with the LVE. You no longer have to distribute sheets of paper and delegate a person to handle the return. Also, the no forms can be lost or forgotten somewhere.

The results of the LVE of individual courses are not published by the Quality Management Unit.

Since the winter semester 2007/2008, university-wide evaluation reports have been prepared per semester, which are available here in electronic form. To retrieve the reports, you need access to the intranet of Europa-Universität Flensburg.

Reports

Evaluation and student feedback are named as central elements of quality assurance in § 5 of the Schleswig-Holstein Higher Education Act.

Excerpt § 5 (1)

The board (Präsidium) ensures the quality of the study programmes through accreditation and student feedback; it ensures regular evaluation of teaching, research, scientific training and technology transfer through internal and external evaluation.

In this sense, course evaluation is an instrument that enables students to evaluate the quality of teaching. Teachers can use this instrument to reflect on the quality of their courses and to continuously develop them.
