Target group:

The "German Language Course A1.1" is for students without any previous knowledge of German.

Course content:

The focus of this course is on basic knowledge of the German language, including everyday conversational topics and situations, German grammar, and vocabulary.

You will learn, e.g., how to greet each other, ask for name, address, telephone number and subject of studies, talk about your family, understand the clock times, listen to a radio interview or talk about cultural events.

Regular and active participation is required for successful completion of the course. This includes the completion of homework in order to continue practicing and consolidating what has been learned in the classroom.

The course consists of 60 hours of face-to-face training. Attendance is compulsory. If you would like to receive a certificate of achievement, you may not miss more than 12 lessons (20%). If you prefer to receive a certificate of attendance, you may not miss more than 18 lessons (30%).

You have to expect an additional 60 hours of work for homework, own vocabulary work, preparation of presentations and preparation for the exam.

There will be a written exam on the last day of the course.

The "German Language Course A2.1" is for students with some previous knowledge of German, who have successfully achieved an A1 level, or have approximately 120 classroom hours of German language instruction and have taken the placement test suggesting participating in an A2.1 class or have successfully completed the previous course with a certificate of achievement.

Course content:

In this course the basic knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary acquired in the A1 course is extended by means of everyday conversation topics and situations.

For example, you will learn to write invitations, promises and refusals, make an appointment with the landlord for a viewing on the phone, understand and talk about house rules, and understand radio broadcasts and newspaper articles.

Regular and active participation is required for successful completion of the course. This includes the completion of homework in order to continue practicing and consolidating what has been learned in the classroom.

The focus of this course is on basic knowledge of the German language, including everyday conversational topics and situations, as well as German grammar, and vocabulary.

For example, you will learn to understand a newspaper article or radio feature, to take notes during a presentation, to write a contribution in a forum (opinion), to give a presentation, etc.

Course participants will participate in games, discussions, and presentations to practice grammatical topics as well as everyday and specific speaking situations.

Regular and active participation is required for successful completion of the course. This includes the completion of homework in order to continue practicing and consolidating what has been learned in the classroom.

The course consolidates knowledge of German at lower levels and expands to content that is more complex. The focus of this course is on the expansion of vocabulary, written expression, and talking about controversial topics. Students will expand their means of communication and deepen their understanding of grammar.

The course "Deutsch im Studienalltag" is suitable for foreign students who have a solid basic knowledge of the German language (A2 level successfully completed).

Course content:

The course offers intensive language training for everyday life and life on campus. The aim is to make it easier for course participants to get started in everyday study life in Germany. The following topics can be covered. The concrete selection takes place after consultation with the course participants.

·         New on campus? - Greet and say goodbye, introduce yourself and others and talk about names, origin and languages

·         "Frau Professore?" - How do I correctly address lecturers?

·         Hungry? - Pay with the Mensacard, buy food: ask and say what you want/ask for the price and reply, talk about food, cook together

·         Who helps in everyday student life? - E.g. problems with the beamer! Ask for help at ZIMT or ask for an adapter; semester ticket lost! Ask for a replacement at the Student Secretariat.

·         I need seminar literature! - Operating a copier or lending a book from the ZHB library

·         Where is ...? - Ask for and give directions: e.g. ask for a lecturer's office in a secretary's office

·         I'm too late! - Dates and appointments: Specifying times, making appointments and agreeing to apologize for a delay

·         Small talk - Clothes and weather: talk about clothes, buy clothes, indicate colours and sizes; talk about the weather

·         Party!!! - Going out and celebrating

Description

How can professors at German universities be addressed correctly? What does a formal e-mail at the university look like? How do I prepare a conversation with a lecturer if I want to discuss the subject of my term paper?

Communication at the university is different in every country. It is based on hidden values, norms and role concepts. To avoid problems due to cultural and linguistic misunderstandings, we offer you a course in Academic Culture in Germany in German (from B2) or English.

An important element of academic culture in Germany is so-called "best academic practice". It describes what qualitatively and ethically good research work and teaching is. Plagiarisms are therefore severely sanctioned in Germany. This course teaches you how to avoid plagiarism and how to quote correctly.

This course also includes working with and on the language, dealing with the following questions: What vocabulary and language structures are common in the academic language and communication at German universities? How does an "scientific style" express itself in speaking and writing? 

Using text examples and writing exercises, you will develop the characteristics and means of speaking the scientific language German, get to know the most important rules and conventions of citation and get an overview of the various types of sources.

In addition, you will learn standard structures for scientific texts on the basis of text examples, learn which formal aspects you must pay attention to when structuring and learn writing techniques that will help you develop a logical argumentation.

This course is mandatory for all incoming students from our partner universities.

The final grade is determined on the basis of the assigned homeworks and the oral participation in the course.
