Description

Instructor: Dr. Maria Bonner, Assoc. Professor

Target group:

The phonetics course "German Standard Pronunciation - cognitive and motor" is suitable for students with advanced knowledge who have successfully completed the German B1 course with a certificate of achievement or have achieved at least 131 in the placement test.

Course Content:

Pronunciation determines the first impression one leaves in foreign language communication. Accented pronunciation can lead to misunderstandings and can render interaction tedious, as attention is tied up by additional decoding effort. This can be fatal if accent is not seen as a linguistic deficiency but leads to social devaluation and thus has significant social consequences for the individual (he/she is odd, unfriendly, incompetent...). Despite this extraordinary importance of pronunciation, it often has a wallflower role in language teaching. Too little time, too little knowledge of how to teach pronunciation, too little knowledge of the phonetic features of the learners' primary languages, making targeted pronunciation training difficult.

The course aims at improving the pronunciation of the participants in order to create the best possible basis for communicating effectively. On the one hand, this involves imparting knowledge of standard pronunciation in accordance with the norms, furthermore exploring the articulatory basics, and finally improving practical motor skills in order to achieve the target language articulation patterns more easily. Intonation plays an important role as the foundation of articulation, because without authentic melodic flow and good timing, sounds ultimately cannot find their place.

Assessment: Portfolio with transcriptions, error analyses and pronunciation texts; min. 80% attendance.

Workload: 120 UUS

- 30 h face-to-face

- 60 h self-study: preparation and wrap-up
