Going Abroad with Erasmus+

About Erasmus+

Enriching lives. Opening minds. Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is the European Union's program to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The program offers higher education funding for the following purposes:

  • Study abroad (SMS)
  • Internships/traineeships (SMP)
  • Teaching (STA)
  • Further education and training (STT)
  • Strategic partnerships between educational institutions from participating countries
  • Alliances of knowledge between institutions in the work and education sectors
  • Guaranteed loans for master students to finance their studies abroad (in some EU countries)

Erasmus+ has a budget of more than €26 billion for the period 2021-2027. The program focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transformation, and promoting young people's participation in democratic life. On June 15, 2022, the European education program celebrated its 35th anniversary. It has since supported international stays for an estimated more than 12 million people - including nearly 1 million Germans in higher education. Promoting language competence and language acquisition is one of the core objectives of the European Union's education program. During their stay abroad, Erasmus+ enables grant recipients to acquire and deepen their workplace languages and/or national languages through free language offers via the EU Academy platform. You can learn more about Erasmus+ on the website of the European Commission.

The Erasmus+ program is divided into program countries and partner countries. Within the framework of Key Action 1, Europa-Universität Flensburg currently maintains cooperation partnerships with numerous program countries as well as five partner countries.

Program countries and EU member states:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden

Other program countries:

For students

Student Mobility for Studies (SMS)

Students can use Erasmus+ to study at a European higher education institution in another participating country after completing their first year of study, in order to expand their social and cultural skills and improve their career prospects there. They learn about the academic system of a foreign university as well as its teaching and learning methods.

Stays can be funded in all program and partner countries, provided that the stay is with an Erasmus+ partner university of EUF with which an Erasmus cooperation agreement exists.

Students should apply for a semester abroad through the International Center. A separate application for Erasmus+ funding is only required for stays at Erasmus+ partner universities in the following countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Republic of Korea, USA.

  • Students can study abroad at an EUF partner university within the framework of the Erasmus program, as long as an Erasmus cooperation partnership exists between that university and EUF.
  • The study abroad period can be for one or two semesters; the minimum duration is two months. It is possible to receive funding several times - up to 12 months in each study period. Students who have already received Erasmus+ funding from Europa-Universität Flensburg for studying abroad will be given lower priority for financial support.
  • The application procedure at the host university is simplified and there are no tuition fees.
  • Home and host universities assist with the application process and help organize the student's stay.
  • The student and two universities sign a Learning Agreement to facilitate the recognition (transfer of credits) of courses taken at the partner university. This agreement lists the courses taken and credit points (ECTS points). Under "Responsible Person at Sending Institution," you'll need to get the signature of the person in your degree program who is responsible for the recognition of coursework taken abroad.
  • Students may submit an informal request for an extension of their stay to the International Center (by e-mail) up to 30 days before the end of their study abroad period.
  • Upon your return to EUF, you will receive a transcript of records certifying the courses taken and credits earned.
  • Financial support is subject to relocation to the destination country.
  • Erasmus+ grant (scholarship) amounts depend on the destination region. Starting in Fall Semester 2023/24, monthly amounts are as follows:
    • Group 1 - €600 : Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and partner country United Kingdom
    • Group 2 - €540: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain
    • Group 3 - €490 : Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Northern Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.
    • Other partner countries - see individual partner countries.
  • Participants with fewer opportunities can receive special "top-up" funding in the amount of €250 per month. These include participants with disabilities (GdB of 20 or more or with additional financial needs abroad), participants with a chronic illness (with additional financial needs abroad) and participants with children (who take their child/children with them during the entire stay abroad). This group also includes first-generation academics (students from a non-academic background) and working students (€450-€850 monthly income 12 months before start of mobility; employment must not be continued abroad).
  • Students with disabilities, chronic illness or children can independently apply through the university for reimbursement of the additional costs that were actually accrued (up to €15,000 per semester) instead of the top-up funding mentioned above. For further information, please visit the DAAD website (in German). You're also welcome to contact us directly!
  • Students who decide to travel in an environmentally friendly way can choose the "Green Travel" option. In this case, they will receive a one-time "top up" grant of €50 in addition to their individual financial aid, plus up to 4 days of additional funding for the extra time needed for the round trip, if applicable. "Green Travel" means travel in which travel mainly uses a low-emission means of transport (such as a bus, train, or carpooling).
  • Applications for an Erasmus+ scholarship for stays outside Europe are submitted annually via the online application portal. All students who have accepted a place at a non-European EUF partner university will be notified of the application deadline by the International Center by email.
  • Scholarship holders are selected within 3 weeks of the application deadline. The following criteria are taken into account when awarding scholarships:
    • Qualifications and previous academic results of the student
    • Relevance of the planned stay abroad in relation to the study program
    • Current language skills that are relevant for studying abroad
    • Willingness to act as an ambassador for studying abroad
  • The Erasmus+ grant (scholarship) amounts to 700 euros per month for stays at the following EUF partner universities (from fall semester 2024/25):
    • Argentina, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo
    • Argentina, Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero
    • Chile, Universidad de Talca
    • Colombia, Universidad EAFIT
    • Colombia, Universidad Pontifica Bolivariana
    • Republic of Korea, Seoul National University of Science and Technology
    • Republic of Korea, Ewha Womans University
    • USA, Knox College
    • USA, Winthrop University
    • USA, University of North Carolina/Wilmington
  • Financial support is subject to relocation to the destination country.
  • Students with fewer opportunities receive a travel allowance. For environmentally friendly travel ("Green Travel"), a higher travel allowance and up to 4 days of additional individual support are provided. The allowance depends on the distance traveled (one way):
    • up to 99 km: € 23
    • 100-499 km: € 180; environmentally friendly travel: € 210
    • 500-1,999 km: €275; environmentally friendly travel: €320

    • 4,000-7,999 km: €820
    • from 8,000 km: € 1,500
The distance is calculated using the Distance Calculator.
  • To apply for top-ups, you need to upload a declaration of honor in the application portal.

Student Internships Abroad (SMP) - also for Graduates

Students can use Erasmus+ to complete full-time internships or traineeships in companies and organizations in other European countries (EU institutions or institutions administering EU programs and diplomatic missions of the students' countries of origin are excluded). As soon as a commitment for an internship has been received, interested students can apply for financial support.

The Erasmus+ program can fund graduate internships that are completed within the first 18 months of graduation or between a bachelor's and master's degree. It is important that you receive approval ("Bewilligung") for the internship before the end of the studies (i.e. before you formally withdraw or exmatriculate). Therefore, it is recommended to start planning already during your final year of study. All forms and the application procedure are congruent with the Erasmus+ internship for enrolled students.

Students can apply for financial support from Erasmus+ for a compulsory internship, or for a voluntary internship lasting between 2 and 12 months (minimum 60 days).

The Erasmus+ program also offers students the following benefits:

  • Recognition of foreign coursework
  • Support during internships (interns have one contact person at the home university, and one at the internship institution)
  • Help preparing for the stay abroad, including preparatory Erasmus+ intensive language training in so-called less commonly spoken languages
  • EU internship contract between the university, the company and the student

Students may submit an informal request for an extension of their stay to the International Center (by e-mail) up to 30 days before the end of their study abroad period.

  • Financial support is subject to relocation to the destination country.
  • The amount of the Erasmus grant (scholarship) depends on your destination region. Current monthly amounts are as follows:
    • Group 1 - €750: Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and UK
    • Group 2 - €690: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain
    • Group 3 - €640 : Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, FYR Macedonia, Turkey
  • Currently, financial support for internships abroad is granted for 60, 90 or 120 days. This means that the period funded may be shorter than your actual period of stay. The exact amount of funding will be stated in the grant approval notification.
  • Compulsory and/or unpaid internships are funded with priority. Paid internships have secondary priority in the awarding of Erasmus+ scholarships.
  • Students and graduates with fewer opportunities can receive special "top-up" funding in the amount of €250 per month. These include participants with disabilities (GdB of 20 or more or with additional financial needs abroad), participants with a chronic illness (with additional financial needs abroad) and participants with children (who take their child/children with them during the entire stay abroad). • Students and graduates who decide to travel in an environmentally friendly way can choose the "Green Travel" option. In this case, they will receive a one-time "top-up" grant of €50 in addition to the individual financial aid, and up to 4 days of additional individual  financial aid for the extra time needed for the round trip, if applicable. "Green Travel" is defined as travel that uses low-emission means of transport (such as bus, train or carpooling) for the majority of the trip.

Your application must be received in full by the International Center at least two months before the internship starts. We always review applications at the start of each month. We then inform the applicants about their eligibility for Erasmus+ funding.

Required application documents:

  • The fully completed and signed Learning Agreement for Traineeships. Note: under "Responsible Person at Sending Institution" you'll need to obtain the signature of the person in your degree program who is responsible for the recognition of foreign coursework. If you're creating the Learning Agreement in connection with your student teaching internship semester (Educational Science students) or for a voluntary internship (without ECTS recognition), please upload it to the application portal only with your signature and the relevant signature from the internship school or employer. In this case, the International Center will obtain for you the signature for the "Sending Institution" once the application has been submitted.
  • Current transcript of records (or bachelor's degree certificate including grade for 1st semester Master's students)
  • Certificate(s) of university enrollment for the entire internship period (if you have them already; graduate internships: current certificate of university enrollment)
  • If applicable, you can upload the declaration of honor to apply for top-ups.
  • If your internship institution provides you with liability or accident insurance, you can upload the relevant proof.

Please apply via the online application portal.

For doctoral students

Doctoral Student Mobility (SMS, SMP, STA, STT)

Doctoral students who wish to go abroad, either to study (SMS) or do an internship (SMP), can receive student mobility funding for that purpose. The travel can be undertaken as a long-term (2-12 months of physical residence) or short-term (5-30 days of physical residence) mobility option. Doctoral students may also combine any mobility plan with a virtual component.

Funding for short-term mobilities is 79 euros per day for up to 14 days, and 56 euros per day thereafter, up to the 30th day of the mobility. For environmentally friendly ("green") travel, students receive a lump sum of 50 euros; additional travel days can also be funded, if necessary. Doctoral students with fewer opportunities receive one-time grants of 100 or 150 euros for short-term mobilities of up to 14 or 30 days, respectively, plus a travel allowance.

Doctoral students who are in an employment relationship with Europa-Universität Flensburg can also go abroad to teach (STA) or for continuing education and training (STT) purposes. The duration of such a mobility is 2 to 60 days in program countries (5-60 days in partner countries) and takes the form of a physical mobility; a virtual component is optional.

For teaching professionals

Teaching mobility (STA)

Erasmus+ supports guest lectureships at European partner universities that have a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). Guest lecturers should strengthen the European dimension of the host university through their stay, complement its course offerings and imparting their expertise to students who cannot or do not wish to study abroad.

If possible, the development of joint study programs between the partner universities should play a role, as should the exchange of teaching content and methods.
Personnel from foreign companies and organizations can also be invited to German universities for teaching purposes.

It is also possible to combine teaching and further education during a stay abroad.

  • Professors and instructors with a contractual relationship to the university
  • Unendowed lecturers
  • Freelance instructors (Lehrbeauftragte) with employment contracts
  • Emeritus professors and retired lecturers
  • Research associates (wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterinnen)
  • Foreign company personnel
  • Guest teaching stays at EUF Erasmus+ partner universities with at least 8 teaching hours per stay or per week (or part thereof).
  • The duration of the stay is between 2 days and 2 months.
  • If teaching and further education are combined, the teaching load is reduced to 4 hours/week.
  • Unit costs listed below correspond to maximum funding rates. The exact amount of funding will be determined after the staff person's return to Germany, based on the travel expense statement, in accordance with the BRKG.
  • Unit costs for the journey varies, depending on the travel distance (one way):

Other mobility formats: Blended Intensive Programmes

Blended Intensive Programs (BIP) are designed to promote innovative learning and teaching methods and to take advantage of online collaboration opportunities. This option combines a short (5-30 days) group mobility involving a physical stay in the destination country for students and/or university staff, along with a virtual phase. The conceptual elaboration is carried out by at least 3 Erasmus+ partner HEIs from 3 program countries.
