PROMOS scholarships

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in concert with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is promoting stays abroad through the programme PROMOS (programme for the increased mobility of German students).

What can be funded?

Study abroad

For the first time, Europa-Universität Flensburg is awarding PROMOS partial scholarships for study abroad periods to non-European countries in the fall semester 2021/22.

  • The call for applications only applies to stays abroad that are carried out in fall semester 2021/22.
  • Scholarships can be awarded for a duration of 3-6 months.
  • Students can apply even if they have already started their semester abroad.
  • The scholarship consists of a monthly residence allowance (half a monthly allowance is paid from day 1-14) and a partial scholarship for mobility.
  • The monthly partial scholarship rate is 350€, 450€ or 550€; depending on the destination country. The partial scholarship rate for mobility also depends on the country; see funding rates here (PDF).
  • Payment is made monthly (in the first month together with the partial scholarship rate for mobility).
  • It is possible to receive Auslands-BAföG in addition to the PROMOS scholarship. All relevant information must be reported to the respective BAföG-office.
  • PROMOS funding is not possible if the stay abroad is already funded with other public funds. This applies, e.g., to scholarships for gifted students from political parties.
  • When planning and carrying out activities abroad, please observe the travel and security restrictions of the Foreign Ministry and inform us before the start of your stay abroad if there is a travel warning.

Internships

Europa-Universität Flensburg focuses on awarding PROMOS partial scholarships for short-term internships (6 weeks to 6 month) in non-European countries.

  • The monthly scholarship is between 350€ and 550€ depending on the destination country (pdf) and is paid on a monthly turn. From day 1-14 a half monthly rate is paid.
  • Internships in Switzerland can be funded if other mobility programmes do not apply (e.g. SEMP).
  • Internships which may be funded through specific programmes of the DAAD are excluded from PROMOS. These are internships in International Organizations (e.g.UN) or EU Institutions as well as internships arranged by AIESEC or IAESTE. Please apply directly at the DAAD.
  • Internships at German schools abroad (Deutsche Auslandsschulen, DAS) can be funded by the DAAD. Internships at DPS, DSD and Fit-schools may be funded by PROMOS. Please consult this Website for the classification of German schools abroad.
  • Internships may also, in rare cases, be funded between the completion of the Bachelor degree and the start of the Masters. This is on the asssumption that a Masters study place at the EUF already exists (please attach this to your application!).
  • Please observe the travel and safety instructions and, in particular, the (partial)travel warnings of the Federal Foreign Office and inform us before the start of the journey if a travel warning has been issued.

Language courses

Every year the Europa-Universität Flensburg promotes fours scholarships to students who are motivated, interested and high performers in foreign languages to be used for residential language courses.

  • The funding consists of 350€ 450€ or 550€ depending on the destination country (pdf) plus 500€ to cover language course fees. The total amoung of the stipend is 850€, 950€ or 1050€.
  • Online-language courses can also be approved until 31st December 2021. This is an exeptional regulation of DAAD regarding the corona situation.
  • The language course must have a duration of at least three weeks with 25 hours of language learning a week.
  • The language course must take place in an established language institution abroad.
  • Please observe the travel and safety instructions and, in particular, the (partial)travel warnings of the Federal Foreign Office and inform us before the start of the journey if a travel warning has been issued.

Study trips

The Europa-Universität Flensburg supports through PROMOS a limited number of study trips with a contribution to the trip costs.

  • The daily allowance per person for trips in EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey is 30€ and in all other countries the daily allowance is 45€ per person.
  • An accompanying person (a lecturer or a professor) may also be eligible for funding.
  • As a rule, the DAAD only funds a trip for a period of 12 days, even if the trip lasts longer than that.
  • This funding is limited to once per each stage of higher education. It is impossible to get funding for the same trip through DAAD or other public resources.
  • As well as aiming to gain specialised knowledge and regional insights, the participants should also meet with local students and teachers.

Who can get funding?

Target group

2. Foreign students who are eligible for funding through BAföG.

3. Non-German students who have enrolled in degree programmes at Europa-Universität Flensburg and will complete the programme here.

The home country is defined as the country where they have spend the majority of their time for at least the last five years. In theory, multiple lots of funding is possible but those who are undertaking unpaid internships and first-time applicants are given priority.

Information on mobility with disability or chronic illness

Background information

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the General Assemby of the United Nations on 13 December 2006. Germany was one of the first countries to sign. With the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention came into force on Germany on 26 March 2009.

As the world's largest funding organisation for international exchange, the DAAD (German Acadeic Exchange Service) would like to encourage students and academics with disabilities or chronic illnesses to spend part of their studies abroad, to improve their language skills and to establish international contacts.

In order to increase equal opportunities within the framework of project funding for both German and international persons (funding recipients, project staff) with disabilities or chronic illnesses, the DAAD can assume the associated additional expenses incurred broad by granting subsidies.

Additional costs within the framework of a mobility measure

To cover theses additional expenses in a project, a grant application must be submitted per person and mobility measure.

A maximum of 10,000 euros can be granted for a period of up to six months to cover the additional expenses (including expenses for a possible accompanying person). In order to assess the additional expenses (e.g. for the journey abroad, local travel, accommodation abroad, medical care, special didactic material, etc.), the expenses for a non-disabled or non-chronically ill person are compared to the expenses for a disabled or chronically ill person. They can only be claimed if they are not covered by any other agency.

The approved additional expenditure (grant) will not be offset against the maximum DAAD grant amounts set for the specific programme.

Traget group

Persons with a degree of disability of at least 50 or a chronic illness who participate in a mobility measure within the framework of the project funding.

Application submission

Please contact the project coordinator of the PROMOS programme. The grant applicatin must be submitted by the project coordinator at least two months before the start of the measure.

The following documents must be submitted:

  • Refusal of cost coverage by health insurance or supplementary insurance (if available)
  • Copy of severely disabled person's identiy card (if available)
  • Informal written and signed confirmation of the disabled or chronically ill person that the requested additional expenses will not be covered by a third party (e.g.health insurance)
  • Medical certificate of the existing disability or chronic illness with a description of the associated limitations
  • Further documents explaining the necessity and appropriateness of the increased expenses in a comprehensible way

Applications for measures already started will not be taken into account.
