Election of the ICES Board of Directors

At this year’s general ICES meeting of members the ICES Board of Directors was elected from among the ICES members.

The Board of Directors advises and decides in all matters of ICES and thus contributes to further strengthening European Studies at the EUF. The board of directors consists of at least three and up to five full-time professors, as well as at least one, and a maximum of two academic staff members. ICES Members elect the Board of Directors and the Executive Director for 2 years. Re-election is possible.

Elected ICES board of directors

Professors

Since 2015, I am professor of sociology and European Studies at the EUF. One of my first tasks was to establish a center to strengthen European Studies at the EUF. Together with a founding board of directors, we started building-up ICES in 2018, which I have headed as executive director ever since. The focus of this phase was (and still is) to make ICES known and visible as a venue for interdisciplinary European Studies both internally and externally and to support European Studies scholars in the best possible way. In this first phase, we have already succeeded in doing this quite well, but of course, there is still a lot to do. In particular, the research profile of the center is to be sharpened by working on the topic "Center-Periphery Dynamics" at ICES in an interdisciplinary way and by affiliating relevant (third-party funded) research projects to ICES.

My own research since my doctorate has focused on Sociology of European Integration, with a focus on Sociology of migration and borders as well as social policy research. In 2020, I started two new research projects, both of which are located at ICES. First, the trinational research project "ValCon: The impact of social media on value conflicts in a differentiated Europe" together with Hans-Jörg Trenz (Copenhagen/ Florence) and Juan Diez Medrano (Madrid) and second, the Franco-German research project "Access+ - Access to social rights in Germany and France" together with Nikola Tietze and Olivier Giraud (Paris).

In the next two years as director of ICES I would like to continue actively promoting European studies at EUF and to sharpen ICES' profile to strengthen its reputation and visibility both EUF-internally and externally as an important venue for interdisciplinary European studies

Ulrich Glassmann is Professor of Comparative Institutional Analysis at the International Institute of Management and Economic Education at the University of Flensburg since 2016. He was a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, Assistant Professor (Akademischer Rat) at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne and Professor pro tempore at the University of Konstanz.

His research is concerned with institutional regimes governing employment, education and innovation in regional economies of Europe. In particular, he focuses on the nexus between family structures and entrepreneurial performance in Mediterranean countries. Theoretically, his work is motivated by his interest in the solution of collective action problems in social dilemma settings.

Ulrich Glassmann has contributed to the current research programme of ICES and would like to continue working with the ICES directors in order to help further shaping the research programme aiming at a better understanding of centre-periphery conflicts in Europe. He would also like to help improve the visibility of the centre and contribute the improvement of the conditions for younger scholars who are engaging in the interdisciplinary field of European Studies

Christof Roos teaches in the M.A. European Studies and in the Economics and Politics study program at the Europa-Universität Flensburg. His research focuses on the European governance of migration and freedom of movement. His current research interests include conflicts over the EU freedom of movement in Western and Eastern Europe and the mechanisms of norm diffusion of European migration management in West Africa. Recent publications on the results of his research have appeared in the Journal of European Social Policy, Comparative European Politics and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

He is a founding member of ICES and has represented the political science perspective on its board of directors since 2018. Together with David Schweikard he is currently working on the conceputalisation of the ICES research program 'Centre-Periphery Conflicts'. The aim of their project is to investigate the normative foundations for territorial cohesion in the European Union. This is to be further elaborated over the next two years and will feed into the development of an overall research framework program for ICES.

Before Christof Roos was appointed to the EUF, he was research professor in the Migration and Diversity Cluster at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel from 2014 to 2017 where he continues to work as an associate scholar in research and teaching. In 2012, he received his doctorate from the International Graduate School for Social Sciences at the University of Bremen, where he conducted research on EU integration in the field of immigration policy. Christof Roos studied political science at Freie Universität Berlin (2000-2006) and at York University Toronto (2003-2004). In addition to his academic activities, Christof Roos worked for the DG Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy from 2006 to 2007 where he conducted research on migration from West African countries. In 2013 and 2014, he worked on the European Strategy on Roma Inclusion and on the European Smart Cities and Communities Initiative in the European Affairs Department of the Berlin Senatskanzlei

Since 2016, I have been a junior professor of European Political Philosophy at EUF. In 2020, the positive interim evaluation took place. I conduct research in the fields of political and social philosophy, philosophy of social sciences and normative ethics, especially on collective action and collective responsibility. Apart from some smaller (cooperation) projects, I am currently working on a larger project on questions of normative theory of international cooperation and supranational associations. In addition to the BA in Educational Sciences, I teach mainly in our European Studies programs (EUS & EUCS).

As a founding member of ICES, I have actively engaged in the establishment and development of the centre since 2016/17. During this time, I was able to contribute to most ICES activities: the research colloquium, the cooperation with a visiting scientist, selection committees and especially the ongoing consultations on the use of funds, initiatives to promote European studies at the EUF, as well as the development of an ICES research program and profile. The principle ICES objectives, i.e. the promotion of early career researchers and the establishment of a dialogue across disciplines, will have to continue to be developed in a meaningful and sustainable direction - as already established by the achievements of the executive management. The formulation and definition of a joint ICES research program on center-periphery constellations and dynamics are to me a particularly interesting challenge in the upcoming work of the ICES Board of Directors. I would like to commit myself in particular to expanding constructive interdisciplinary cooperation between empirical research, social and cultural sciences, and normative analysis.

As Professor of European Media Studies/ Europäische Medienwissenschaften), I hold one of the Professorships with a European Denomination that were newly created when the University of Flensburg was renamed Europa-Universität Flensburg. I was appointed to the EUF in 2016, before that I was assistant professor for European Media Culture at the Bauhaus Universität Weimar. I am a member of the Seminar for German Studies and the Institute for Language, Literature and Media. I have been a member of the ICES board of directors since its foundation and teach in the courses: B.A. Education Sciences, German Studies, M.A. Culture - Language - Media (KSM) and B.A. European Cultures and Society (EUCS).

My research interests: The intersection of Europe and media: a) Europe in the media: Representation of the EU / Europe in online media (see project LEMEL; DIREPA and DIREPA-DICOME); b) Europe through media: history of media culture in Europe (teaching); c) European media cultural studies (book publication)

My ICES-affiliated research projects (https://www.uni-flensburg.de/ices/forschung/projekte ):

-          MEWEB: Media of East/West European Border Traffic during the Cold War (funded by BMBF):

-          CODES: Communication, cultural diversity and solidarity (Erasmus+)

-          DIREPA DICOME discourses of commemoration in media (funded by: German Federal Foreign Office)

-          Border Complexities (funded by the German-French University),

-          LEMEL: L'Europe dans les médias en ligne (funded by Fondation de l'Université de Cergy-Pontoise)

Other activities: Making ICES visible and audible: among other things, contact person for European affairs of non-academic stakeholders, especially in the rural areas of Schleswig-Holstein.

My engagement in ICES and my objectives: As a founding member of the board of directors I co-developed the four research axes (Evidence & Communication; Culture & Identity; Justice & Democracy as well as Welfare & Work), contributed to all aspects of ICES development, its calls, event formats and its institutional and organizational structure. In recent years, I have followed the development of ICES' objectives, its advisory board structure and above all my own strong application activities. Currently, my main focus is on the development of the joint ICES research program on Centre – Periphery concerns and dynamics. I would be more than happy if the election gave me the opportunity for a continuation in the development of this research program as well as in the further establishment and expansion of ICES.

What is important to me and what I am committed to: besides the development of the research focus, I am committed to curricular development at the EUF and to (large-scale) research application activities.

Curricular development: I am (co-)responsible for the conception of the new trinational B.A. Kulturelle Vermittlungen Europas (Universities: EUF, Strasbourg, Malaga): the multilingualism of Europe is a concern of mine. At the moment, I am working on the conception of a European module in the B.A. Educational Sciences and I am also involved in the conception of a European Certificate. Whoever studies at the EUF, no matter which course of studies he/she has chosen, should have dealt with Europe at least once during his/her studies.

Research applications: Currently I am working on an International Research Training Group or European Training Network application: The Formation of Europe within a Space of Communication; other, smaller collaborative research applications for existing and new European networks at the German Federal Foreign Office, Villa Vigoni etc. are ongoing.

Research not only on Europe, but European research: To work together with colleagues from Eastern and Western Europe on a common goal, especially to get to know the academic and disciplinary differences and the differences between countries - and to learn to balance them out, that is my declared goal, which should be made tangible to as many people as possible: in teaching, in research. Not only students should be mobile, we teachers should also become mobile in Europe. Driving Europe forward, not only as a research focus, but also in European collaborative research means living academic interdisciplinarity and interculturality with colleagues from different disciplines in Eastern and Western Europe, with the goal of creating a European communication space in academia that enables a dialogue at eye level between (Central) Eastern European researchers, including the EUF Partnership University Penza in Russia, and Western European researchers. I stand up for disciplinary and methodological diversity, for thinking about Europe before and beyond the EU, in terms of cultural history and cultural studies, and yet I think that, especially as a representative of media studies, I can build a bridge to the more social science, empirically oriented approaches to European Studies. Another bridge that I can and want to build is the one between the teacher training programs and the non-teacher training programs at EUF.

Academic staff members

Since 2013, I am academic staff member at the Seminar for German Studies (Institute for Language, Literature and Media) of the EUF, one of the coordinators of the Lern- und Forschungswerkstatt for German Studies, and member of the board of the Seminar for German Studies. I am teaching in the teacher training courses of the subject German as well as in the study program 'Transformation Studies' and in the field of 'Global Learning'.

Main areas of research: Literary and media didactics, European education in the school subject German, border studies, refuge and exile literature, narrative research, intermediality, children's and youth literature.

Current research projects:

-          EuKiD - Europe-related competencies in in the school subject German (together with Ass.-Prof. Dr. Jennifer Pavlik, University of Luxembourg) - funded by the Jean Monnet Programme of the European Commission (9/2020 - 8/2022)

-          Europas Grenzen. Fluchthilfe und Fluchtverhinderung in der Gegenwartsliteratur

Motivation and objectives for this candidacy: I have deliberately affiliated my research project "EuKiD - Europabezogene Kompetenzen im Deutschunterricht", which combines European studies with educational research, to ICES, because I appreciate the broad professional expertise and the lively interdisciplinary exchange in the field of European studies. I would like to participate in this dialogue more intensively in the future. I find it exciting to bring together European studies research with didactic and educational policy issues and would like to give new impulses, in particular within the context of ICES events and interdisciplinary networking. This would facilitate networking the research center with scholars of didactics having a focus on 'European education'.

In addition, it is important to me to establish or expand the dialogue with institutions from civil society (including educational institutions and associations dealing with European affairs) in order to contribute to the transfer of knowledge and mutual exchange between academia and society. Finally yet importantly, I would like to contribute my experience (e.g. in the acquisition of third-party funds) and contacts, which have been established through my research project EuKiD, to ICES by working on the board of directors. In this way, I would also try to initiate and strengthen the dialogue with representatives from educational policy, IQSH, DAAD and school institutions.
