European Non-Territorial Autonomy Network’s (ENTAN) first training school in Flensburg and Sønderborg

From 8-11 September 2020, ENTAN – The European Non-Territorial Autonomy Network (www.entan.org) will hold its first Training School in Flensburg and Sønderborg, co-organized by the Centre of Border Region Studies of the University of Southern Denmark, the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Studies at the Europa-Universität Flensburg.
ENTAN is a COST Action funded under the EU’s Horizon research programme. It is a network with 100+ members in 36 countries. The Action is aimed at examining the concept of non-territorial autonomy (NTA). ENTAN particularly focuses on NTA arrangements for reducing inter-ethnic tensions within a state and on the accommodation of the needs of different communities while preventing calls to separate statehood. It tackles recent developments in the theories and practices of cultural diversity; minority rights (including linguistic and educational rights); state functions and sovereignty; conflict resolution through policy arrangements; policymaking and inclusiveness. The main objective is to investigate the existing non-territorial autonomy mechanisms and policies and to develop new modalities for the accommodation of differences in the context of growing challenges stemming from globalisation, regionalisation and European supranational integration. The network fosters interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary group work, and provides for training and empowerment of young researchers, academic conferences and publications, as well as for the dissemination of results to policy makers, civil society organisations and communities.
The Training School will connect young researchers with experienced scholars within the field. During the three working days, the participants will also have the opportunity to become acquainted with the Danish-German border region’s model of minority autonomy in cultural affairs, and they will meet and discuss with young members of the four minorities residing in the region. The Training School is taking place at the Dansk Centralbibliotek for Sydslesvig and University of Southern Denmark’s campus Alsion in Sønderborg.
