Description
Course Description:
Underdevelopment, poverty, tremendous income and wealth inequality, poor health and the lack of education are among the key challenges of many developing countries. According to the World Bank, 3.4 billion people still find it difficult to meet basic human needs. Development Economics focuses on the political, institutional and cultural mechanisms that foster economic development. It also explores strategies and policies directed towards enabling the economy to escape poverty traps. Generally, Development Economics is concerned with the efficient allocation of existing resources and their sustained growth.
This course provides an in-depth discussion of different modern strategies to foster economic development and it explains how developing nations can be set on the track of sustained economic development. This course seeks to explore some of the main topics and debates in development economics such as, for example:
- The meaning of economic development
- Indicators and the measurement of economic development
- Income and economic growth and development theories
- Population growth and fertility
- Poverty, vulnerability, inequality
- Human capital, health, and education
- The role of credit markets and microfinance,
- International trade theory and development strategy
- Sustainable development and the environment
The study material for the course (slides, exercises, etc.) will be provided in due course.
The course closes with a 2-hour closed book exam at the end of term.

Description
Die Teilnahme am Kolloquium ist verpflichtend für alle Studierenden, die in der Prüfungsordnung 2017 oder 2021 studieren. die ihre Abschlussarbeit in der
jeweiligen Abteilung schreiben wollen.
Inhalt:
Im Rahmen des Kolloquiums werden den Teilnehmer*innen verschiedene Themen rund um das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten nähergebracht wie bspw. Phasen einer Abschlussarbeit, Themensuche und -eingrenzung, Literaturquellen und -datenbanken, Literatursoftware, Bewertungskriterien, formale Anforderungen, Zitationsstile, Exposé-Erstellung sowie die Fallstudienmethodik. Zusätzlich gibt es an verschiedenen Terminen die Möglichkeit, Probleme und Fragen in der Gruppe untereinander zu erörtern. Ferner dient das Format dem Austausch über wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen.
Ziel:
Das Kolloquium hat zum Ziel, während des Erstellungsprozesses der Bachelorarbeiten eine begleitende Betreuung zu gewährleisten und die Qualität der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zu verbessern. Es bietet ein Forum für die Vorstellung der laufenden Arbeiten sowie für die Diskussion grundlegender Fragen zum wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten.
Entwicklung eines Exposés und Präsentationen zum jeweiligen Stand der Abschlussarbeit.
