Current Research and Research Interests

Currently, I am working on my PhD thesis in English linguistics with Prof. Dr. Olaf Jäkel as my advisor. In my PhD project, I am analyzing academic discourse and the role of metaphor in the communication of knowledge. The investigation is exploratory and involves the analysis of 27 lectures filmed at an American college in the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Philosophy and Psychology. The analysis combines the Cognitive Metaphor Theory and Discourse Analysis.

The Cognitive Metaphor Theory constitutes one of my primary research interests. Before I began working on my PhD project, I investigated emotion metaphors in expert-lay-communication (link). The psychological and linguistic aspects of emotions are also part of my general research interests. Furthermore, I am interested in metaphor in general (outside the Cognitive Metaphor Theory), Discourse Analysis, Language Acquisition and (the Teaching of) English as a Foreign Language.
