Evaluating a cluster initiative is extremely important in order to reduce the vulnerability of cluster initiatives. On the other hand it is also interesting to see if the positive effects of cluster initiatives compensate the investment in it. In order to achieve this goal, evaluation is needed; task to be achieved during this research.

Working Title: "What Constrains Southern African Countries from Further Improving their Logistics and Manufacturing Performance?"
Seaports, road and rail transport networks as well as manufacturing locations (supply chains) in southern Africa are characterized by very different performance levels. Only very few countries can be described as supply chain performers. There are countries, which can be characterized as partial supply chain performers. Then, there are countries, which can be referred to as supply chain underperformers. To put it differently, the majority of countries fall well short of their supply chain potential. This is despite the finding that supply chain performance decides on the involvement of an economy in today’s fragmented and international value networks. However, the scarcity of resources and high number of conceivable measures make this a difficult undertaking. A constraint-focussed approach to supply chain performance seems promising to tackle this issue.
This research project aims at identifying binding constraints of supply chain performance as well as identifying and assessing improvement measures in order to increase supply chain performance in selected countries of the mainland Southern African Development Community.

Dissertation topic: The meaning of intercultural and political influence factors in the economic cooperation between the Middle East and Europe on the example of Iran and Germany (working title)
The dissertation addresses the intercultural comparison of macro- and micro-economic as well as business management development of the economies of regions in the Orient and Europe. The question that is addressed is which are the factors that together form an approach to the development in the cultural and economic cooperation and which are the obstacles that could stand in the way of this development.
The goal of the dissertation is finding a way to reach concrete solutions for cultural conflict and better economic cooperation between Germany and Iran. All forces of development that can be seen as acting as a driving force for the economic and domestic economic development of the European and Oriental market will be identified will be identified through a qualitative empirical analysis (interviews with experts). Furthermore, an empirical analysis of every interpretation model will be carried out, that is present in the discussion on standardization and complexity of the methodology of economics.
The research interest and motivation are based in the fact that this topic has still not been dealt with in this form. On the basis of her Iranian origin and multicultural upbringing, the author focuses on cultural and economic processes between Orient and Europe, Iran and Germany in particular, in her dissertation.

Dissertation topic: An Inquiry into and Description of Feedback Processes between Human Resource Management and Company Environment. A Cybernetic, System-theoretical Description Based on Qualitative Data Obtained through a Questionnaire, Observation and Systemic Set-Up of Organizations (working title)
The object of research of the dissertation is the feedback processes between companies and their environment which come to exist through the application of human resource management in managing relations between the managing powers and co-workers. This is done through the identification and demonstration of the general feedback processes that are described through the resulting feedback model.
The data were collected through qualitative interviews with managing powers. Managing powers of different age, sex, hierarchy level and sector were chosen. The collected data are described as a process scheme using the theory of cybernetic systems as the theoretical basis, finally constituting the above-mentioned model. Within this, both the factors that affect the management as the ones that are affected by it, the feedback just as the differences in the perception of the managing powers regarding the influences, are considered.
The results provide a transparent image of management practices which can also contribute to the development of new measures of development of managing powers. As far as research is concerned, an important gap in the research of management regarding the perspective of management and the extent of its success is thereby overcome. The question asked is to what extent it is possible for humans to incorporate managing powers of this model in such a way that they can raise their rate of success and lead to a further humanization of work.

Dissertation topic: Trust as a Strategic Factor in the Success of Banks and Savings Banks while Doing Business with Private Clients
The research project examines the trust relations between private clients and their bank. The goal is to conceptualize and operationalize the hypothetical construct of ?trust? in doing business with private clients. With this scope, a measuring model which should identify the factors that influence trust relations and the different effect of certain components on the construct of trust will be developed.
The characterization of trust-related behavior between the client and the bank and the understanding of the influencing factors are the basic components of success in doing business with private clients, as only a long-term relation with the client which normally guarantees high initial investments enables an accompaniment throughout the life-cycle of a product and reduces the risk of uncooperative behavior. The conclusions that could already be derived from y using discussions with focus groups and individual interviews will be tested in an empirical quantitative study.

Dissertation topic: "Speculation" in the public discourse - A business ethics contribution
In the past ten years the world has been increasingly plagued by hunger crises. Increasing prices for groceries hit those the hardest that already spend a large share of their income on the purchase of food so that hunger crises become manifest in developing countries at first. The humanitarian catastrophe motivates a public discourse that attempts to feel out the source of the disaster and should strive to avoid such hunger crises. The discourse attributes playing a major role in the emergence of the crises to futures markets. The disseration examines how the public discourse is conducted and acts on the assumption that the argumentative line of attack of the discourse is determined by the use of certain socially shared patterns of thought. Linguistic categories express these patterns of thought and can provoke the public to estimate the role of futures markets inexpediently. The application of the linguistic categories does not only inexpediently picture the societal role of the futures markets, but misleads the discourse to lose track of its goal - namely to help avoid prospective hunger crises.

Dissertation topic: Where's the border? - Communication distances in cross-border clusters (working title)
Borders exist not only in the physical, but also a modeled/virtual world. Discrepancies can occur particularly in communication where there is a different understanding of vicinity. The goal of the thesis is to replicate a cross-border cluster with special regard to its communication dynamics and use methods of network analysis and surveying to examine whether the physical border will be evident in the model as well. The model will be then be combined with an interactive and a qualitative model, in order to achieve a basis for triangulation. In this way, the existence of a resistance that the border causes will be determined so that it can be purposefully dismantled.
