Bemerkung:
In the course "Europe in the Global Economy" students will study contemporary problems of European economies and societies which are linked to political and economic integration as well as the overall process of internationalization.

The focus is on social risks and welfare in open economies. In the first sessions students will become acquainted to the institutional set-up of the European welfare states, learn about the different ways in which citizens are protected from social risks in European countries and will assess recent changes in economy and society.

The following sessions deal with the process of European integration, in particular the development of peripheries and the promotion of local production systems. In the remaining sessions students will analyse how European integration contributed to the erosion of the social compromise. Contemporary problems such as youth unemployment will be looked into. The course is designed to teach students on the institutional diversity in which firms and markets are embedded and enable them to analyse problems related to dysfunctional arrangements.
