Applying for Admission to the M.A. Program in European Studies

The Master of Arts program in European Studies is a consecutive, English-language, interdisciplinary and research-oriented degree program focused on acquiring specialized knowledge, skills and abilities in disciplines relevant to European Studies in the humanities, political sciences, law, economics and social sciences, and European studies. The program offers three possible concentrations: political science and law, science and economics, and humanities. Students acquire specialized knowledge geared towards current practice-related research questions and gain corresponding skills and abilities, which they can develop independently after completing the program.

You can apply to this program starting on December 1, 2023 via Europa-Universität Flensburg’s central online application portal.

For detailed information, please visit the European Studies homepage:

Go to the European Studies M.A. program website

The following menu items provide comprehensive information about applying for admission to the Master of Arts program in European Studies at Europa-Universität Flensburg.

Please note: Applicants to this program must have successfully completed or be close to completing their bachelor's degree studies. High school graduates cannot directly apply for admission to the master's program.

Internal applicants: If you are already enrolled in a bachelor's program at Europa-Universität Flensburg, we recommend that you re-register in a timely manner for the semester in which you will begin the master's program. Doing so has the following advantages:

  • It simplifies and expedites the re-enrollment process
  • In the event that the BA is not successfully completed as planned, you will already have enrolled for the BA in the following semester

Selection process

In degree programs with open admissions, all applicants who have submitted the required documents on time and in the correct form, and who meet the admission requirements, are admitted directly to the program.

In restricted-admission programs, all applications received in due form and time go through a selection process. This process takes place immediately after the application deadline has passed.

Selection Process

All applications received on time and in the correct form will be included in the selection process.

How the selection process works:

After certain preliminary quotas have been determined, the university initially will allocate 20% of the available study places according to the identified waiting time. The waiting time calculation begins from the date when the B.A. or a recognized equivalent course of study was completed. The allocation of the remaining study places takes place within the scope of the university selection procedure. Further details are specified in § 5 para. 3 of the university selection statutes (Hochschulauswahlsatzung).

Provisional admission

If you have not yet provided proof of a qualifying college degree by the application deadline, you will receive provisional admission. For admission to a degree program, you must provide proof that you have earned your undergraduate degree (e.g., the BA degree) by a specified date (November 1). This also applies to the proof of any required language certificates.

Application process

Application Process

Europa-Universität Flensburg has a two-step application process:

  1. Fill out the form in our online application portal.
  2. Send in all necessary application documents.

First, open the form in the online application portal. Enter all required personal information for your specific degree program. When you finish, print out the completed form. The printout has the following information: your personal application number, more details about the application procedure, and your login username and password for the application portal. It also includes a link to the application instructions for your degree program and a list of the required application documents for your chosen degree program. You're required to mail paper copies of your application form and documents to the EUF admissions office; the address is pre-printed on the application form.

Important: The application deadline refers to the date of receipt by EUF. In other words, the university must receive your application and required documents by the deadline. Neither the postmark date nor the date when you completed the online application are relevant.

As a next step, the university will review your application documents. You can check for yourself in the application portal whether your application is complete. If a document is missing, the admissions office will inform you by email that your application status has changed. Any missing documents listed in the application portal must be submitted by the application deadline. Late submissions will NOT be accepted.

If you've made a mistake in the online application or want to change your application, you can reapply online at any time. This will generate a new application number. Only your most recently submitted application will be considered in the selection process; all previous applications will be disregarded.

How the online application works

You may only apply for one restricted-admission degree program (or a combined restricted-admission degree program). If you apply for several applications for admission-restricted programs, during selection the university will only consider your most recent application processed by the admissions office.

Applications must be submitted within the official application period to be considered.  Applications submitted online before the official application start date or after the application deadline will not be reviewed. You are entirely responsible for ensuring that the university receives your application by the deadline.

Go to the online application portal

Please note:

To apply for admission to the master’s program, you need not have fully and successfully completed your bachelor’s degree studies or submit proof that you hold the requisite B.A. degree by the application deadline.

If you expect to successfully complete your studies and obtain the B.A. in the semester when you submit your application, you may also apply. In this case, your required application documents and the legal nature (contents) of the admission notice will differ from those of other applicants; in all other aspects, your application process will be the same.

If your application documents prove that you have successfully completed your undergraduate studies and have met all formal admission requirements, you will receive a legally binding admission notice.

If you have met all formal admission requirements but cannot yet provide documentary proof that you hold the bachelor's degree -- for example, because you haven't yet received grades for all of your exams -- you will be conditionally admitted into the program and will receive a provisional admission notice.

Advanced Semester Admission

Applying for Admission to an Advanced Semester

If you are already enrolled in a cultural studies master’s program at another university and would like to complete your master’s studies at Europa-Universität Flensburg, you can apply for admission to an advanced semester.

Prerequisites

As a prerequisite for admission to an advanced semester, EUF must have reviewed and formally recognized the validity of any examinations you have already taken elsewhere, and must have placed you into an advanced semester.

Advanced-semester applicants must submit a separate application (including all required documents) for admission to an advanced semester in addition to the normal application materials.

For application purposes, you only need to show that you have been placed into an advanced semester. This is just a matter of sending a quick "two-line" note via email or mail.

Recognition / Advanced Placement

If you have questions about transferring a course or courses taken at an external institution (recognition) or about advanced placement, please first contact the faculty advisor for your chosen degree program or subject.

Go to subject-specific advising >>

Subject-specific admissions restrictions also apply for advanced semester applicants.

An overview of all the available study places in all subjects and subject semesters is always available at the start of each application process. This can help you assess your chances of being admitted into a specific subject.

  • Citizens of a member state of the European Union (EU)

Questions?

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact:

Please note

As an international applicant, you should submit your documents as early as possible or preferably submit your certificates and translations of them to the admissions office for review before the official application deadline (scanned documents by email).

You will then receive an assessment of the certificate, which you should then submit along with your application.

If verification is not possible, your documents must be sent by the admissions office to the central office in Bonn. The review process there can take several months. Nevertheless, in order to participate in the selection procedure, the university must receive the result of the Bonn review by the application deadline at the latest.
