Selection procedure

The application and selection process is organized and carried out by Europa-Universität Flensburg.

Applicants must complete the online form in full and upload the required documents. Please refer to the FAQs to find out what kinds of documents are required.

Special Study-Related Achievements and Volunteer Activities

Your calculated average grade may be improved if you submit appropriate documentation, as follows:

  • Special study-related achievement in Germany (see §3, para. 2, no. 2a of the scholarship guidelines): 0.1 bonus points per achievement
  • Special study-related achievement outside of Germany (see §3, para. 2, no. 2a of the scholarship guidelines): Up to 0.2 bonus points per achievement
  • Special volunteer activities (see §3, para. 2, no. 2b of the scholarship guidelines):  0.1 bonus points per activity

Special study-related (university preparatory or university-parallel) achievements include the following: successful participation in university preparatory programs (e.g. ProRef); study visits to foreign universities; internships or university-parallel activities (e.g. as a student assistantship); completed vocational training or professional activities; and/or special achievements (e.g. prizes and scholarships), provided that these are relevant to the subject of study.

Voluntary activities include regular participation in social, political or religious organizations, institutions, groups or bodies within or outside the university over a period of at least six months during the last two calendar years[CL1] . These organizations, institutions, groups and committees must be committed to the free democratic basic order of the Federal Republic of Germany (in accordance with the Grundgesetz, Art. 21, para. 2).

Special challenges

Your calculated average grade can be improved in the following cases:

  • If you provide proof of special personal challenges (see §3, para. 2, no. 3a of the scholarship guidelines):  0.2 bonus points per challenge
  • If you provide proof of special familial challenges (see §3, para. 2, no. 3 b of the scholarship guidelines): 0.2 bonus points per challenge or - in case of a single parent - 0.3 bonus points per challenge
  • If you provide proof of special economic challenges (see §3, para. 2, no. 3c of the scholarship guidelines):  0.2 bonus points or - in case of social hardship - 0.3 bonus points

Personal challenges include disabilities, chronic illnesses and/or breaks in one's own education (e.g. due to flight).

Familial challenges include taking care of one's own child/children, especially as a single parent, or for a close relative in need of care with at least care level 2, and/or coming from a so-called "educationally distant" home (both parents lack a school-leaving certificate).

Special economic challenges include economic need, especially in the form of social hardship. For detailed information, please refer to §4 of the scholarship guidelines.

Calculating a total value for your application

Your application for the Deutschlandstipendium is given a total grade. This is derived from the base value produced by calculating your average grade. If the applicant provides appropriate documentary evidence, the total value is calculated by subtracting above criteria from the base value.

This procedure results in a ranked list from which to select scholarship recipients.
