Program profile

A defining feature of this master's program is that it addresses core questions about early childhood education relevant to educational leadership work in light of relevant research findings on competence development and the effectiveness of support concepts. Since this expertise cannot be provided by one institution alone, the program was designed in cooperation with other universities and institutes in Germany, such as the Mercator Institute at the University of Cologne, the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN), and the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. This cooperation ensures that the degree program can assimilate and use new findings from the joint federal and state initiative "Education through Language and Literacy" (BISS) in the elementary sector.

Professional training of managers or potential managers working in early childhood education deals with the transmission of academically sound knowledge about children’s educational and upbringing processes. In a general sense, this knowledge covers topics that have to do with inclusion, development, diagnostics and support and, in particular, the development of skills in the areas of social behavior, language, mathematical and scientific education, movement and health. The teaching and deepening of "knowledge about" and "knowledge of what for" is closely linked with "knowledge of how", i.e. with procedural competencies, in the sense of application orientation. The latter are particularly central to modules geared towards the concrete practice of directing an educational institution. Here, the focus is on teaching competencies in the areas of quality management, personnel management and communication. In view of the dynamic changes in childhood and society, the degree program aims to help students develop skills and attitudes that ar open to new things, reflect critically on developments with regard to opportunities and problems, apply what they have learned to new problems in leadership work, and to acquire new knowledge independently even after graduation.
