Workshop for PhD students of English: Linguistics, Applied Linguistics (Englische Fachdidaktik) & Literature 2014

Workshop for PhD students of English: Linguistics, Applied Linguistics (Englische Fachdidaktik) & Literature

November 28 - 29, 2014

Dear fellow PhD students,

We, Anke Beger & Jo Blane, PhD students of the English Department, are hosting a workshop for anyone working on a PhD in English Linguistics, Applied Linguistics (Englische Fachdidaktik), English Literature or English Media Studies at one of the universities in Northern Germany. The workshop will take place from November 28 - 29, 2014.

Inspired by a workshop for PhD students of German at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, we are addressing PhD students of English at the Northern German universities (Universität Bremen, Universität Flensburg, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald, Universität Hamburg, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Universität Rostock) in order to foster communication not only between the different regional universities but amongst the different disciplines of English.

Central to this workshop is the presentation and discussion of doctoral research projects. Our workshop is aimed at PhD students who are at various stages in their project (from being at the very beginning to being at the very end); you are therefore most welcome to present your work-in-progress. The discussion phase following each presentation is dedicated to the provision of valuable feedback. These new impulses can be used to aid individual research projects but at the same time, every participant can benefit from these discussions in regard to content, methodology and interpretation. We also hope that, in addition to helping familiarize ourselves with each other's research projects, the intensive exchange between the participants will result in continuing inter- and intradisciplinary communication between the Northern German universities. Some of us may also discover possibilities for future collaboration.

Moreover, we would like to think of this workshop as the launch of a series of workshops which uphold and intensify the network established during our initiating event. Thus, we intend to have regular workshops (bi-annually) that allow the English PhD students of Northern Germany to share and discuss their research. Ideally, the different universities will take turns in hosting this PhD workshop.

Program

Click here to see the program. The coffee and lunch breaks also serve as opportunities for networking. Refreshments, snacks and lunch will be provided for you by our university. The After-Work program (see below) gives us the excellent opportunity of getting  to know each other better and discussing issues raised during the day in more depth.

An After-Work program will take place on Friday night. After Friday's last session of presentations everyone is welcome to join us at Flensburg's cozy Christmas Market where we will have the opportunity to get to know each other better over a mug of Mulled Wine. Afterwards, those who wish to can dine with us at the Roter Hof (Rote Straße 14, 24937 Flensburg; homepage: http://www.roterhof.de/). Here, we can round up the evening together in an informal setting, before recharging our batteries for the second day of presentations.
