European Week at Europa-University of Flensburg

As a European University, we are particularly committed to the European idea. Therefore, the Europa-University of Flensburg will be holding many different events on 9. and 10. May in association with European Week. The EUF will celebrate this week with discussions, a European-Forum and information events on semesters abroad, as well as a panel discussion. Guests from partner colleges, along with representatives from the DAAD and the Europa-University Flensburg, will be discussing steps to establish strategic partnerships. At the same time, the university will also be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus program.

Notes on the events

Neither days are lecture-free. The Board asks all teaching staff, whose courses take place over the two days of events on May 9 and 10, to allow their students to attend the events or even participate in them with projects or presentations on the subject of Europe.

EUF workers are permitted to visit events during their working day.

If you have any ideas or contributions to offer in relation to the European Forum, please e-mail the organisation team, giving an idea of your plan, what you would need in the way of premises, and details of your target group. Closing date for submissions is April 10 2017.

European Forum

At the "European Forum", taking place between 12 and 5pm in the Helsinki building foyer, University members of all status will be afforded the opportunity to participate and inform one another. This can take the form of short lectures, as well as workshops, information stands, posters or demonstrations dealing with Europe or European issues. Furthermore, we will be visited by delegations from our European partner universities, in order to improve their knowledge of EUF and its activities, as well as develop the relations between their institutions and the Europa-University. The European Union of Schleswig-Holstein and the Regional Centre of Political Education will also participate in events and offer information on the EU.

The European Forum is aimed at university members of all statuses who wish to inform themselves about the possibilities of stays abroad. Additionally, we would like to direct the interests of students towards European-focused courses here at the EUF. Therefore, we will invite all the schools in the region, as well as European Schools in Schleswig-Holstein generally.

Panel Discussion

Münchhausens Europa

How the EU must pull their own tail out of the swamp.

The Refugee Crisis, the rise of populism, the success of the Brexit campaign and the threat of a Grexit – the European Union is in a serious crisis. It is divided into winners and losers, and threatens to break apart under the weight of its self-inflicted problems. The current global situation, however, needs a stronger Europe now more than ever. For only a strong and democratic Europe can fight the flames that go beyond a national reach: terrorism, energy crises and climate change. And only a strong and democratic Europe can redeem the prosperity promised to all.

How can this better Europe be designed? How must its Member States relate to each other? How are the decisions of their representatives democratically controlled?

Discussing these questions are:

  • Prof. Dr. Hauke Brunkhorst, sociologist at the EUF
  • Robert Misik, journalist and publicist
  • Prof. Dr. Ulrike Liebert, Jean Monnet Center for European Studies
  • Prof. em. Dr. Ulrich Preuß, State theorist
  • Moderation: Prof. Dr. Monika Eigmüller, Vice-President for Europe and International Affairs at the EUF
