Music on Campus

At Europa-Universität Flensburg there are various music groups, which liven up the campus and add rhythm to studying. All of these groups are open to those who are interested and new musicians are always welcome.

If you're dreaming of notes at night, your fingers start to tingle at the mere sight of musical instruments and rhythm is running through your veins, then one of the following groups may just be the right thing for you:

  • Big Band
  • University Choir
  • University Orchestra

The Big Band

The Big Band was founded in 1999 by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Böhle. It is composed of school children, students and professionals. About one-third of the participants are members of the Department of Music. The repertoire ranges from 30s and 40s swing to Latin, rock and modern jazz. The band plays arrangements by composers such Sammy Nestico and Peter Herbolzheimer. The Big Band plays at campus events, parties, concerts and private events. So far it has performed with Bob Lanese, Vincent Nielsen, Hanne Römer and Gitte Haenning and has also recorded three CDs. The Big Band always welcomes new members.

The University's Choir

The University's Choir, under the direction of Thekla Jonathal, rehearses every week during the semester and is open to all (not only students and university staff) who are interested in joining and enjoy singing. Previous experience is not required.

The choir regularly performs at the church services of the student communities and traditionally opens the studio concert. The choir also performs at its own full-length concerts, which are hugely popular. The repertoire is varied, ranging from classical and modern to rock, pop, gospel and big names like Shakira or Antonin Dvorak. There is something for everyone.

The University Orchestra

The University Orchestra is a symphonic ensemble open to all students and interested instrumentalists. Since 1997 the Orchestra has been a non-profit organization. It cooperates closely with Europa-Universität Flensburg and University of Applied Sciences. Currently 65 musicians play in the orchestra and produce several symphony programs each year. In addition to performances in Flensburg the orchestra also performs concerts throughout the region.
