Although there in recent years has been an upsurge of interest in and work on empathy, there is still no clear consensus about what precisely it is. Is empathy a question of sharing somebody else’s feelings, or caring about someone else, or being emotionally affected by someone’s else’s experiences though not necessarily experiencing the same experiences. Is it a question of imagining oneself in another’s situation, or of imagining being another in that other’s situation, or simply of making inferences about other’s mental states? In my talk, I will consider some of the suggestions found in the classical phenomenological investigation of empathy, and discuss their contemporary relevance.

In dem Vortrag geht Zahavi auf einige klassischer phänomenologische Untersuchungen ein und diskutiert deren aktuelle Relevanz.
